     Custom work can best be described as any work that changes the standard design of a musical instrument as it was from the manufacturer.  Design modifications, in a broad sense, can be either internal (bore) or external, adding or taking away from the materials to achieve a more personalized musical instrument.  Improving the function, sound, intonation or response of a musical instrument may require custom modifications in the design.  The musical instruments of today are the direct result of numerous custom modifications that, based on their merit, became accepted and applied as standard product features.  This is evident if one considers that the original Brasswinds had neither valves nor slides and the original woodwinds had no keys.  However, both woodwinds and Brasswinds have evolved due to numerous custom modifications and have become the contemporary musical  instruments so familiar to us today.
