Complete Restoration in Lacquer

Mechanical Overhaul

Every saxophone repair or restoration will be executed by our master saxophone technician with over forty years experience in saxophone repair, restoration and performance. The mechanical overhaul of a saxophone at the Musical Instrument Repair Shop includes the complete disassembly of all keywork from the body of the saxophone and a thorough cleaning of all keys, rods, pivot screws, springs, tone stacks, body surfaces and the entire bore.  All keywork pivot points are tightened by hand burnishing methods which restores the action to a like new performance level.  All tone stacks are checked and correctly leveled where necessary.  The installation of premium quality pads, all corks, felts and necessary springs.  Then the saxophone is reassembled, all pads are aligned and leveled over the tone stacks, keywork is lubricated and the pad seating process is done.  Once the seating process is completed the saxophone is completely regulated and thoroughly play tested.  After 48 hours the pad seat retention is checked and a final play test is performed prior to return shipping to you, our customer.

For some time now there have been brand new professional brass instruments produced by the manufacturer and offered in “raw brass” finishes.  These instruments are sold in their shiny new appearance and then, over time, oxidize to become the dull finish horns we occasionally see.   There are some considerations that should be made before selecting the “raw brass” finish.

When restoring brass instruments, the lacquer, silver-plating or gold plating is applied not only for their beautiful appearances but these coatings act as protections against wear.  If the instrument is left in "raw brass" one needs to keep in mind that the elements as well as the acid from the player's own hands will attack the instrument and greatly decrease the life expectancy of your brass instrument.

Also, the residue from this oxidation process can be absorbed into the players system and may not be very healthy at all.  Some players have discovered that they are actually allergic to this brass oxidation residue.

The Musical Instrument Repair Shop does, on the occasion of a customer’s request, leave a brasswind restoration in the “raw brass”  finish, but only after having advised of the negative effects.

The Bach Stradivarius Company used to state on their web site that Bach instruments are not available in raw brass due to the possibility of hazardous brass poisoning.

Saxophone Dent Removal

Saxophones are prone to damage under normal care and usage.  Minor dents are common place and most saxophone repairs require some dent removal.  The Musical Instrument Repair Shop, when performing mechanical overhauls and complete restorations, will do minor dent removal on saxophones at no extra charge.  If the dent work becomes excessive, the Musical Instrument Repair Shop will contact and advise you of any additional charges prior to any work being performed.
